Yes, the tiny village of Clawddnewydd has done it again! Following the success of the 2009 Beauty and the Beast calendar (the UK’s first double-sided unisex naked charity calendar) that raised over £10,000 for the Cancer Unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, the villagers have put their fund-raising experience to good use once again.
The cause this time is to save the village pub. The Glan Llyn Inn, affectionately known as “The Glanny”was put in the hands of the receivers earlier this year and with no buyers coming forward, the village was faced with losing its central hub of the community forever.
The only chance of saving it would be to raise the £90,000 needed to buy it and run it as a non-profit venture by and for the community. For the past six months the villagers have been organising fund-raising event and securing sponsorship in an effort to raise that amount, and this time it was the lads of the village football team who volunteered to strip down to their socks to kick off the fund-raising effort.
Normally we prefer to support projects that raise funds for Cancer Support, Heart, Stroke or Children’s charities etc. This particular community however, are constantly supporting such charities. The village pub is the hub that gives the community focus, which makes saving it a worthy cause. We are therefore proud to have shot the pictures for this calendar which will go some way toward them reaching their goal, and wish the villagers of Clawddnewydd every success.
The calendar will be on sale at the village shop, the Glan Llyn, the Co-op in Ruthin, The Studio in Market Street, or from any member of the football team.
We have learned today, that the £90,000 target has been met and the pub has now been bought. The Glan Llyn Inn will officially reopen for business as a community-run pub on Saturday 21st December 2013, just in time to bring some Christmas Cheer to the village!
